Put this in the hands of kids who like books like Smile, Sisters, Roller Girl, Sunny Side Up, Real Friends and other books like those. I won’t spoil it, but I would love to discuss it with some students and get their take on it. There’s an interesting twist to the story that I enjoyed. Drawing helps her with her lonely feelings and the knots she gets in her. Invisible Emmie contains an epilogue, which is a section at the end of a book that. Review When a note about her crush becomes public, Emmie wants to withdraw even more. I think most kids will be able to identify with the highs and lows of school at this age. Synopsis: Perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Jennifer L. These things that Emmie goes through are pretty typical for middle school. She reminded me of several girls I know – definitely on the quiet side (although the young ladies I know are more confident than Emmie and have bigger social safety nets). Introduce the prelogue, prologue, and title chapter of Terri Libensons graphic novel, Invisible Emmie Support students as they make personal connections. What if he sees it? How can he miss it when it gets texted to everyone?! Review In Positively Izzy, we meet Bri, the brain, and Izzy, the dreamer. Terris graphic novel style illustrations sit well alongside the text chapters. Invisible Emmie is the story of quiet, shy, artistic Emmie and popular, outgoing, athletic Katie, and how their lives unexpectedly intersect one day, when an embarrassing note falls into the wrong hands. When a note about her crush becomes public, Emmie wants to withdraw even more. such as Invisible Emmie or Positively Izzie, or as a standalone story. Drawing helps her with her lonely feelings and the knots she gets in her stomach at times. So Emmie keeps her head down and focuses on her art. She has a best friend, but they don’t see each other much during the school day. But since they left for college, Emmie’s gotten more reserved. She used to talk more, when her older siblings were at home. Emmie is a quiet, introverted 7th grader. Like the Pro 1000, the 4100 has a two-minute timer with quadrant pacing plus a pressure sensor and is not trumped up with unproven features. If you can’t find the Oral-B Pro 1000, or if you prefer a quieter brush with a head that vibrates back and forth instead of oscillates, we recommend the Philips Sonicare 4100. The biggest drawback: It’s louder than other brushes we’ve tested.Īpproximate cost of ownership ($45 brush handle 1 + four Oral-B replacement heads) after: Fully charged, it lasts for at least a week of twice-daily two-minute brushing sessions before needing a recharge, which is on a par with the other toothbrushes we tested in this price range and plenty for most people. The Pro 1000 comes with a minimalist charging pedestal that simply requires dropping the brush onto a peg. Our testers have found its oscillating brushing motion especially effective: It feels plenty powerful to deliver a reliable cleaning. It also has a pressure sensor to let you know when you’re brushing too hard. It is a strange outcome for the old file sharing/NFS/WebDav model and it doesn’t seem the most elegant solution, but sync seems to be the current technology direction. So our relatively small (1.5GB) of shared data exists on the Synology NAS (not baked up) and on both of our machines (so multiple backups). Update : I ended up enabling Synology Cloud Station, including installing the Mac client for both Emily and I. That image will in turn go back to the Synology NAS Time Machine backup as well as to my local CCC backups. I’ll put the shared files there, then use CCC to put them back on an image on my laptop. Update 2: I’ll rewrite this when I finalize things, but it looks like the Synology NAS gives me the permission controls I need. The AE’s file sharing security model seems to make backup impossible. I could experiment with partitioning the thumb drive on my Mac, but I think I need to look more at the Synology. I thought I also created a Kids user, but I don’t see that Folder. When I switched “Secure Shared Disks” from “With a disk password” to “With accounts” it didn’t wipe my data, it created a Users folder containing the “Parents” folder and hid the existing folders. When I insert the flash drive into my MacBook I can see how it’s organized, including the folders that were on the flash drive when it was “password” access rather than “account” access. There’s no way for me to connect with to the AE shared disk (partitions?) and see everything. So Emily and I connect as “Parents” and see the “Parents” and “Shared” folder, but we don’t see a “Kids” folder unless we connect with that username password. When a client connects you are asked username/password, that gives access to the Folder of the same name as well as a “Shared” folder. From Airport Utility we can create username/password “accounts”. This Apple article partly explains what is supposed to happen. Except free space shows data is still there.” The AE has an operating system with some kind of file system support and access controls, but we have very limited access to it. "When you use Airport Utility to change AirPort Extreme Shared Disk(s) security it *seems* to wipe out everything on the disk. They in turn are backed up by both CCC (to removable drives) and Time Machine (to the Synology NAS). I’m going to stick our unused $20 SanDisk Ultra Fit 64GB flash drive in back of the Airport Extreme. I already use Carbon Copy Cloner as part of our nightly backup, I’ll just back the AE Flash Drive up to disk image on one of the my OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock drives. Sync solutions mean new software, but perhaps only on one machine. Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive all move our family data into the Cloud - and I’d like to not worry about that. There are lots of options, but nothing is quite perfect. Our home’s options are Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft’s OneDrive, a Synology NAS with or without Synology Cloud Station, Mac LAN based sync solutions (ex: ChronoSync, note MSFT bundles this with Windows), and an Airport Extreme external flash drive. Now that I’ve retired our iMac and gone all-MacBook, I need one of those solutions for a small number of files (MBs, not even 1 GB). Excluding a traditional server/file share the options back then were Dropbox, a NAS, and, peer-to-peer sync solutions. Lifehacker’s guide to home file sharing was written in 2010 for Windows users. |
